Hormones are chemical messengers. The right panel depends on the question: cycles, fertility, thyroid, or morning cortisol. Sample timing changes the number, especially for women's reproductive hormones and cortisol. Tell the phlebotomist the day of the cycle if that applies.
Hormones are made by glands such as the thyroid, pituitary, adrenals, ovaries and testes. They control metabolism, growth, stress response, periods, fertility and sexual health. Small shifts can produce symptoms that seem unrelated, such as acne, weight change, low mood or poor sleep.
Hormone results are read against timing, age, sex and symptoms. A single value outside the range is not a diagnosis, and doctors often repeat a test or add another hormone before drawing conclusions.
Your doctor may suggest one test or a combination, depending on your symptoms, age and earlier reports. Each test answers a different question. Here are the main blood tests used to look at hormones:
Thyroid Profile-Total (T3, T4 & TSH Ultra-sensitive) measures T3 Total, T4 Total, TSH Ultra-sensitive. It is the usual starting panel when weight, mood, periods or energy have changed without a clear reason. Read more about the Thyroid Profile-Total (T3, T4 & TSH Ultra-sensitive).
FSH measures FSH. A pituitary hormone that talks to the ovaries or testes. Timing in the cycle matters for women. Read more about the FSH.
LH measures LH. Paired with FSH when cycles are irregular or fertility is being evaluated. Read more about the LH.
Prolactin measures Prolactin. Best drawn in a calm morning sample. Stress and some medicines can raise it. Read more about the Prolactin.
Testosterone Total measures Testosterone Total. A morning sample is preferred. Doctors read it with symptoms, not as a standalone score. Read more about the Testosterone Total.
Cortisol Morning measures Cortisol, Morning. Draw between 7 and 9 in the morning. Levels fall later in the day, so timing is part of the result. Read more about the Cortisol Morning.
Some general signs that people in this group notice:
Book a hormone panel if symptoms persist for a few months, ideally after a doctor has suggested which hormones to check. Severe headache with vision changes, or extreme weakness with vomiting and low blood pressure, needs urgent care.
Hormone problems are more common at certain life stages and with some conditions.
Puberty, pregnancy, the months after delivery, perimenopause and menopause all bring large hormonal shifts.
Excess weight affects oestrogen, testosterone and insulin, and is closely tied with PCOS in women.
Some medicines change hormone levels or test results.
Long-term stress and night-shift work affect cortisol and can disturb periods and other hormones.
Many hormones problems develop quietly and are easier to manage when they are found early. A simple blood test, collected at home, is often the first step. Early testing helps in a few clear ways:
Blood markers often change before symptoms are strong enough to notice. Testing early gives you and your doctor more time to act, while the choices are still simple.
A report in hand helps a doctor decide whether you need a repeat test, a specialist visit, a scan, or only a follow-up date. It replaces guesswork with a number.
Your first report becomes the reference point. Later results are much easier to read when there is an earlier value to compare them with.
Home sample collection and a free report counselling call mean you do not have to take a day off or sit in a waiting room to get started.
It depends on the hormone. FSH, LH and estradiol are often tested on day 2 to 5 of the menstrual cycle, testosterone and cortisol in the early morning, and prolactin in a calm morning sample. Your doctor will specify the timing.
Blood tests support a PCOS diagnosis but cannot confirm it alone. Doctors use a combination of irregular periods, signs of raised androgens and ultrasound findings, after ruling out other causes such as thyroid and prolactin problems.
Cortisol is highest in the early morning and falls through the day. A sample between 7 and 9 am gives a result that can be compared with reference ranges. Further tests are needed to confirm high or low cortisol.
Stress, recent exercise, sleep, nipple stimulation, some medicines and an underactive thyroid can raise prolactin. A small, harmless pituitary growth is a less common cause. A mildly high result is often repeated.
Yes. Testosterone is highest in the morning and varies from day to day. A low result is usually repeated on a different morning before treatment is considered.
Yes. They change FSH, LH, estradiol and several binding proteins, so many results are hard to interpret while taking them. Tell your doctor before testing so they can decide on timing.
